How to care for your AKRON GTX boots
- 1. Remove loose dirt after every hike: Use a soft brush or damp cloth to wipe off mud, dust, and debris from the upper and outsole. Pay extra attention to the crevices between the tread lugs. Do not use a stiff wire brush—it can scratch the fabric and damage the DWR coating. Check the tread for embedded stones or grit before storing the boots.
- 2. Hand wash with mild soap and warm water: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of a gentle, GORE-TEX-safe cleaner (avoid detergents with bleach, fabric softener, or solvents). Dip a soft sponge or cloth and gently scrub the entire boot. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap residue. Never machine wash or dry clean GORE-TEX boots. If the boots are very dirty, let them soak for 10–15 minutes before scrubbing.
- 3. Air dry away from direct heat: Stuff the boots with crumpled newspaper or a clean towel to absorb moisture and help them hold their shape. Place them in a well-ventilated area at room temperature. Do not place them near a radiator, heater, or in direct sunlight—high heat can delaminate the membrane and shrink the upper. Replace the newspaper or towel after a few hours to speed drying.
- 4. Test and restore the DWR coating: Once the boots are completely dry, sprinkle a few drops of water on the upper. If the water beads up and rolls off, the DWR is still active. If it soaks in or forms a flat patch, apply a GORE-TEX-compatible spray-on or wash-in reproofer. Spray evenly from about 6 inches away, then let the boots dry for 24 hours. Reapply DWR every 2–3 months or after every 5–6 heavy uses in wet conditions.
