Learn how to use the DragonTail MNT EVO GTX for wet terrain and alpine scrambling. Step-by-step tips for fit, care, and performance.
Quick answer
The DragonTail MNT EVO GTX is a waterproof approach shoe built for technical rock and wet alpine terrain. Use these steps to fit, lace, and care for it so you get reliable grip and dryness on every scramble.
Why waterproof matters for approach shoes
Standard approach shoes drain quickly but leave your feet wet in rain or stream crossings. The DragonTail MNT EVO GTX uses a GORE-TEX membrane to block water while letting sweat escape, so you stay dry on wet rock and muddy trails. The trade-off is that waterproof shoes take longer to dry out if they do get soaked from the top, so pair them with gaiters in deep water.
When to choose the DragonTail MNT EVO GTX over a non-waterproof model
Pick the DragonTail MNT EVO GTX for damp approaches, alpine starts with dew-covered grass, or any day where rain is likely. For dry, hot scrambles where breathability matters more than wet protection, a non-waterproof approach shoe will keep your feet cooler and dry faster after creek crossings.
How to use your DragonTail MNT EVO GTX for wet terrain
- 1. Check the fit with thin socks: Try the shoe with a thin synthetic or merino sock. Your toes should have a thumb’s width of space in front, and your heel should not lift when you walk. A snug midfoot wrap prevents blisters on long approaches. If your foot slides forward on descents, the shoe is too big – size down or add a heel lock lace.
- 2. Use a heel-lock lacing pattern: After the top eyelet, loop the lace back through the lower eyelet on the same side to create a small loop, then cross and tie. This locks your heel in place and reduces pressure points on steep terrain. A loose heel causes hot spots on downclimbs – re-lace if you feel movement.
- 3. Break them in on dry ground first: Wear the shoes for short walks on pavement or easy trails before taking them on a wet scramble. This lets the GORE-TEX membrane settle and your feet adjust to the fit. Expect a break-in of 5–10 miles. Don't take them straight onto wet rock – the outsole needs a few miles to grip optimally.
- 4. Clean and dry after every wet outing: Rinse off mud and grit with cool water, stuff the shoes with newspaper, and let them air dry away from direct heat. Heat damages the GORE-TEX membrane and the sticky rubber outsole. Never put them on a radiator or in a dryer – the waterproof layer will delaminate.
- 5. Reapply DWR when water stops beading: When the outer fabric no longer beads water, clean the shoes and spray on a GORE-TEX-compatible DWR treatment. This keeps the membrane breathing and prevents the outer layer from saturating. Saturated outer fabric makes the shoe feel heavier and colder even if the inside stays dry.
