Category: Tips & Care

A practical, step-by-step routine for cleaning and reproofing the VETTA SYNTH GTX® synthetic hiking boot, with the mistakes that quietly shorten waterproof life.

Quick answer

Clean the VETTA SYNTH GTX® with lukewarm water, a soft brush and a pH-neutral cleaner, air-dry it away from heat, then reproof the synthetic upper only when water stops beading. Skip harsh detergents and direct heat, which are the fastest ways to damage the waterproof membrane and upper.

Why synthetic uppers need a gentler routine

The VETTA SYNTH GTX® uses a synthetic upper rather than leather, so it does not need conditioning oils or wax. What it does need is regular removal of grit and salts that abrade the fabric and block breathability. A soft brush and mild cleaner are enough; stiff bristles and solvent cleaners can roughen the surface and reduce water repellency.

When to clean versus when to reproof

Clean after every few hikes or whenever mud and dust are visible. Reproof less often, only when water no longer beads on the upper. Reproofing a clean, dry boot works; reproofing over dirt traps grit and gives patchy coverage.

Step-by-step VETTA SYNTH GTX® care

  1. Remove loose dirt and grit: Brush off dried mud with a soft brush and rinse the boot with lukewarm water. Do not use a high-pressure hose, which can force water past the membrane. Check the tongue and collar for trapped grit before washing.
  2. Wash with a pH-neutral cleaner: Apply a small amount of pH-neutral cleaner to a soft brush and work it over the synthetic upper, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid household detergent or solvent cleaners. Rinse until the water runs clear, not just until suds disappear.
  3. Clean the inside and footbed: Remove the footbed if possible and wipe the interior with a damp cloth. Do not soak the boot or submerge it. Let the footbed dry separately so it does not hold moisture against the lining.
  4. Air-dry away from heat: Stuff the boot with newspaper or a dry cloth and air-dry at room temperature. Never place it on a radiator, in direct sun, or near a fire. Change the stuffing once if it feels damp.
  5. Reproof the upper when water stops beading: Apply a spray or sponge-on reproofer made for synthetic and mixed uppers, following the product label. Use it on a clean, dry boot and let it cure fully before wearing. Test on a small hidden area first to check for discoloration.
  6. Restore shape and store dry: Loosen the laces, stuff the boot lightly, and store it in a dry, ventilated place. Do not store it compressed in a bag while damp. Recheck the boot after 24 hours; if it still feels damp inside, keep drying before storage.
